Great new CD from an outstanding musician!

While I was in New York City I had the pleasure to meet and hang out with one of the finest trumpet players I have ever seen!  Her name is Nadje Noordhuis and she is a musician who lived in Australia until 9 years ago where she moved to New York and has been taking the scene by force since she got there.  I was lucky enough to catch the CD pre-release party while I was visiting and could not say enough good onto the performers as well as the compositions themselves.  The entire night was magical and if you would like to purchase the new album from Nadje Noordjuis click the link below:

Jazz Master Classes and Duet Performances!

This week I am lucky enough to be traveling out of town once again to begin an education and performance tour with Erica von Kleist.  Spokane Washington is our first destination where I will be playing a show with long time friend and collaborator Rachel Bade-McMurphy and her husband Brendan McMurphy at Jones Radiator.  The next day we will do two masterclasses at Whitworth University.

I am so exited to play with Erica again, we had an amazing performance at the Lincoln Center last month and have some very well thought out music that is close to both of our hearts.  The idea of the east coast vibe meeting the west coast vibe is working amazingly and I feel this group has some outstanding music to share.

October 10 – with RBMC jazz                                           – Jones Radiator Spokane, Wa

October 11 – Masterclass with EVK                          – Whitworth University Spokane, Wa

October 12 – EVK sits in with Andre Floyd and Mood Iguana                    – Whitefish, MT

October 13 – East meets West a Duet with EVK/DRC                    – Blondies Bigfork, MT

Oh Montana it’s good to be back!

It was a wonderful visit to the big city but it is really nice getting back into the swing of music back home in Montana land!

Last night I played with Andre Floyd and Mood Iguana at Scotty’s bar and was pleased with the energy and musicianship on the stage.  David Griffith was on fire with his arsenal of musical toys at full.  People were dancing to the grooves of Ron Reeves on the bass and Andre was sending them home with that amazing style he’s got.

Andre has a new CD available for more information about that you can email me at:

Thanks Scotty’s and thank you to my wonderful bandmates!  Let’s do it again soon!

Basses and Scary Happenings

On the 28th I went to the best bass retailer/repair shop that I have ever seen, David Gage Stringed Instruments.  I have never seen so many basses and after playing a few of them realized that they are all amazing.  I got a chance to explore some travel bass options and talk shop with Ben Blumgart (the bass expert on hand for the Czech-Ease as well as the showroom)  This visit helped me dig deeper into the mystery that is owning and caring for an upright bass and gave me some goals to shoot for as far as future purchases.  Thank you David Gage Stringed Instruments for the friendly service and knowledgeable staff!

Later that night I went to the production of “Sleep No More” at the McKittrick Hotel and was amazed at the level of thought, art direction and production that went into the show.  The whole hotel was the show and we were allowed to travel to each floor and check out the action.  The audience (hotel guests) were silent and wore white masks and performers were unmasked.  The show developed over the course of two hours on different floors of the hotel so the audience could follow a performer around or just explore the hotel.  The show was loosely bassed on Shakespeare’s MacBeth and that is all I will say of what happened other than it was a surreal experience with a lot of like minded people running around having fun like we were in a haunted house!

Que Viva La Musica!

September 27th was a great night to go and catch some great cuban music and food at a wonderful restaurant called Guantanamera.  The food was AMAZNG authentic cuban cuisine, mojitos.  The band was a latin quartet called the Pedrito  Martinez and consisted of conga, bongo, bass and tres.  The music was so profound and powerful it was knocking pictures off the walls and other customers were screaming and removing clothing (not all the way mind you).  Thank you Pedrito Martinez and all of the staff at Guantanamera in New York City for a wonderful night!

Late Night Jams A-Plenty!

Wow is all I can say to the night life in New York City!

I went to a jam session at the Tea Lounge in Brooklyn last night and it was unlike any jam session I had ever seen.  The house band was awesome and started the night with a quirky arrangement of Bernie’s Tune that set the vibe on chill for the rest of the night.  When the band opened up the session for jammers I looked around and realized that there was metric ton of musicians waiting to jam.  I played with my long time bass playing friend Seth Myers on a tune and when we were finished a whole other band came up.  This trend continued until the end of the night as there were about 15 full bands in the room waiting to play.

After that session I went to the village to the Fat Cat to check out Ned Gould and his quartet.  Very nice arrangements as well as swingin’ musicians made this pool hall/ jazz club stand out as one of the most unique places I have been yet.

Proceeding to Smalls we arrived just in time for a jam session there.  A completely different but equally chill vibe encompassed the club and once again my friend and I got a chance to connect on the stage.  The jam was very nice as everyone was listening to one another and truly making music instead of letting the rest of the world and it’s energy affect the moment.  This is a jam I will not soon forget!  Thank you to all the musicians and my friends Seth and Erica for showing me these jams.

Dave Douglas CD release “Be Still”

I went to the 92Y Tribeca last night and checked out Dave Douglas and his new quintet!  What a great show featuring Aoife O’Donovan on vocals.  She is the vocalist for “Crooked Still” and this was her first jazz endeavor that I am aware of.  The program consisted of traditional tunes that Dave’s late mother suggested he play so it was a very nice blend of hymns and original tunes bringing a rootsy, folky vibe to Daves modern composition and playing style.  It was great for me because I have been a long time Dave Douglas fan!  I got to meet the band and hand out with a few of them for drinks after the show.

If you missed the show you can listen here:

Life changing big band night!

Tonight I went to the village and had my mind BLOWN!!!!

First I had the most amazing cheesecake of my life Roccos pastery shop then to the Village Vangaurd.  I saw the most swingin big band (the Vangaurd Band)!

I got to meet Louis Bonia, Douglas Purviance, Frank Basile, Tanya Darby, and the guy who wrote the book on drums (literally) John Riley!

They played alot of Thad jones charts and played them well cause Jerry Dodgion was sitting in on lead alto making at least three members of the original Thad Jones – Mel Lewis orchestra.
